The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Brendan Lemieux on unconditional NHL waivers with a view to contract termination. The transaction is a mutual agreement between the club and the player.
In March, Lemieux signed a one-year, one-way contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, earning a cap hit of $775,000.
“Brendan requested to be released from his contract so he could pursue a new opportunity,” Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky said. “We wish him nothing but the best in the next phase of his career.”
Lemieux has yet to play an NHL game this season. Instead, he played twelve games in the AHL with Carolina’s affiliate team, the Chicago Wolves. He scored two goals and racked up 30 penalty minutes in this period.
This was the 28-year-old’s first time in the AHL since the 2017-18 season, when he played 51 games for the Jets affiliate, the Manitoba Moose.
Lemieux played 32 games for the Hurricanes last season. He scored three goals and five points.
As a result of the contract termination, Lemieux becomes a UFA.
Lemieux was the 31st overall pick in the 2014 NHL draft by the Buffalo Sabres. However, he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets, where his NHL career began.
Lemieux played for three other teams before landing a spot in Carolina. He played in three seasons for the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings. The Denver native also played 18 games for the Philadelphia Flyers before his tenure with the Hurricanes.
Lemieux played 307 games in the NHL, racking up 74 points and 548 penalty minutes.
