NEW JERSEY — Rep. Mikie Sherrill has entered the race to become New Jersey’s next governor.
Sherrill, a Democrat who was first elected to the U.S. House in 2018 and re-elected this yearannounced her campaign for governor early this morning in a video on YouTube.
Sherrill, a former military helicopter pilot, is entering her fourth term representing New Jersey’s 11th District. She doesn’t have to resign to run for governor.
The list of candidates for governor is growing
The field to succeed Governor Phil Murphy, who is term-limited and cannot run for office in 2025, is deepening on the Democratic side.
Last week, Rep. Josh Gottheimer launched his campaign for governor, join former state senator Stephen Sweeney, Mayor of Jersey, Steven Fulop And Newark Mayor Ras Barakaall of which had previously announced their bids.
Sources indicated to CBS News New York that Sherrill’s announcement was not far behind Gottheimer’s.
On the Republican side, State Senator Jon Bramnick, Jack Ciatarelliwho narrowly lost to Murphy in 2021and Bill Spadea all participated in the race.
