CHICAGO (CBS) — First responders have suspended their rescue effort for a missing boater in the Playpen at Navy Pier in Chicago, but say further searches will be a recovery effort.

Saturday was a busy day at the Box as people took advantage of the nice weather, but first responders were called to more than one emergency, one of which appears to have ended in tragedy.

Chicago police say a man in his late 50s fell from a boat into the water around 4:20 p.m. He never returned to service. There were few other details.

Firefighters were also called to the Playpen for a boat fire, and first responders sent a tugboat to a personal watercraft stranded on Northerly Island near the Adler Planetarium.

Police said they could not provide any more information about the missing man, but firefighters told CBS 2 they searched the water for an hour without any success. After putting their operations into recovery mode, they ended the day without seeing the missing skipper.

CBS 2 reached out on social media to a man who may be the boat’s owner, but has not yet heard back.
