HASTINGS, Minn. — You’d think a boat would be just what you need in a flood, but people in Hastings can’t even get to it.

Bart Shanks manages the 80-slip Hub’s Yacht Club Marina which is currently floating and full of water. To get to your boat you have to be on another boat or walk through chest deep flood water.

“Put on some waders, go for a swim or take the boat out to the marina and see how it goes,” laughs Shanks.

It’s safe to say that water sports enthusiasts don’t overdo their enthusiasm, but some do enjoy getting around in a new way.

“People are enjoying their kayaks and being able to get into areas they can’t get to with kayaks, like the woods or under a bridge,” Shanks smiled. “Others have fished in areas where we normally park a car.”

Shanks says the good news is that not all boats sink.

“Our biggest concern is that if the power goes out at the jetties, the boats will take in too much water and sink,” Shanks said.

Flooding has hit more than 40 counties, with Gov. Tim Walz on Friday calling it one of the 10 worst floods to ever hit the state.

As federal officials begin to assess the widespread damage, they are asking people to document any losses.

For water sports enthusiasts in Hastings, the hope is that it won’t rain and that everything will return to normal.
