RGIII outlines three reasons for 49ers demise in 2024 originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Robert Griffin III believes three major issues have doomed the 49ers this season.
The former NFL quarterback explained why San Francisco has had a disappointing season, which will likely result in the team missing the playoffs for the first time in three years.
“1) Brandon Aiyuk’s offseason negotiations have disrupted team chemistry,” Griffin III wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Not because it was his fault that he got his money, but because the organization let it drag on all offseason to training camp. His injury, the loss of CMC and Trent Williams, has damaged the multiplicity that has made the 49ers so dangerous with Kyle Shanahan at the helm.
“2) The 49ers don’t protect the ball at all. 27th in giveaways and 20th in turnover margin. Kyle’s offense is based more on ball control than most other systems. Turning the ball over on offense is detrimental, but in Kyle’s system it is diabolical , because his mentality and game are not built for coming from behind.”
“3) What has always been the saving grace for the 49ers is not the Avengers on offense, but the strength of their defense. This year the defense is not playing inspired football. Everywhere on the tape you see a lack of effort and poor body language. That’s why they rank 25th against defense and 19th against the run.”

What started as a promising season has turned into a disaster for the 49ers, with injuries and sloppy play. The nail in the coffin seemingly came with Sunday night’s blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills. Christian McCaffrey suffered a season-ending PCL injury, and Bills quarterback Josh Allen absolutely torched San Francisco’s defense.
At 5-7, San Francisco should win and get some help to make the postseason, something that seems unlikely based on the past few games.
For Griffin III, these three major issues destroy any chance the team will make any changes, and they are unlikely to be resolved this season.
