RHP Michael Tonkin, DFA’d Sunday by Yankees, Claimed via waivers by Twins

Enlightener Michael Tonkinwho played for both the Mets and Yankees this season has found a new home.

Tonkin was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Sunday, but has been claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins. Interestingly, this is Tonkin’s second stint with the Twins this season, as he was traded to Minnesota by the Mets on April 5, only to be DFA’d by the team four days later.

Tonkin, 34, started off strong for the Yankees. In his first 27 appearances with the Bombers, Tonkin threw to a 1.47 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 13 walks in 36.2 innings. His next 12 appearances were a different story, however, as he posted a 6.98 ERA and opponents hit .304 against him.

The right-handed pitcher spent his first five pro seasons as a Twin, posting a 4.43 ERA. After stops in Japan and Mexico, Tonkin pitched 45 games with Atlanta last season before signing with the Mets last December.
