(CBS DETROIT) — Rite Aid has confirmed that it will close all of its Michigan stores after filing for bankruptcy.
The company went bankrupt in 2023 after struggling with opioid lawsuits in recent years. In 2022, the company settled for up to $30 million after its pharmacies were accused of contributing to an oversupply of prescription opioids.
Rite Aid says it is struggling with high rent costs for underperforming stores, and says it has closed more than 200 struggling locations in recent years.
In response, the company has announced store closures in recent years, with the latest closure affecting more than 170 stores in Michigan.
In June, a notice of additional closures was filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of New Jersey. The filing included 27 additional stores in Michigan and Ohio. Five of the stores are in Metro Detroit.
Rite Aid previously announced Last year, 19 other stores in the state closed and 12 additional stores.
