Oct. 15—Roswell police say officers shot and killed a man armed with a handgun during a foot chase Tuesday afternoon.
This is the second police shooting in Roswell in less than a week. On Thursday, at least one officer shot and killed a man armed with a rifle during a foot chase.
Roswell police spokesman Todd Wildermuth said officers were trying to arrest 28-year-old Louie Archuleta of Artesia on a warrant in a hotel parking lot just after 3 p.m. when he drove away. Archuleta then hit another vehicle outside Eastern New Mexico Medical Center before running away.
Wildermut said that during the foot chase, officers shot at Archuleta, “who was struck by one or more of those shots.”
He said Archuleta, who had a gun at the time of the shooting, was taken to a hospital, where he died. The officers and the driver of the other car were not injured.
Police said Archuleta’s arrest warrant was for multiple charges, including child abuse, negligently making a firearm accessible to a minor and receiving stolen property.
New Mexico State Police are investigating the case.
State police said in a social media post that more information will be released as it becomes available.
