Russia says the peace summit in Ukraine has produced ‘zero’ results

Ukraine’s peace summit in Switzerland last weekend yielded no results, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s official spokesman said in Moscow on Monday.

A total of 93 states and international organizations took part in the Lucerne talks. A large majority supported the final declaration that emphasized Ukraine’s sovereignty within internationally recognized borders.

“If you talk about the results of this meeting, they naturally tend towards zero,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Moscow was not bothered that a number of normally friendly states had voted in favor of the final declaration, he said.

“We will of course take into account the attitude that these countries have taken. It’s important to us. We will continue to explain our arguments to them,” Peskov said.

The final statement noted that the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, which is occupied by Russia, should be under Ukrainian control.

Russia was not invited to the summit and China declined to attend. Major countries that were present did not sign the final declaration, including Brazil, India, Indonesia and South Africa.

Peskov said Putin’s peace proposals remain under discussion, according to Russian state news agency TASS. Putin presented his own peace plan a day before the summit, demanding that Ukraine surrender territory held by Russian forces and withdraw its application to join NATO.
