Russia will have to scale back attacks on front lines within six weeks due to losses, Ukrainian commander says

  • According to a Ukrainian commander, Russia must scale back attacks on the front within a month and a half.

  • General Oleksandr Pivnenko told Ukrinform that Russia’s offensive capabilities are “not unlimited.”

  • Moscow is grappling with a rising death toll in Ukraine, partly due to meat-spewing attacks.

According to a Ukrainian commander, Russia will have to scale back its attacks on the front lines in a month and a half due to losses on the battlefield.

General Oleksandr Pivnenko, the commander of the Ukrainian National Guard, made the assessment to Ukrinform on Thursday.

“In a month and a half, they will no longer be able to attack in several directions at once and will switch to defense,” he told the newspaper, according to a translation by the Kyiv Independent.

Pivnenko mentioned the “not unlimited” offensive capabilities of the Russian armed forces and the losses they suffer on the front.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has suffered increasing casualties, partly because its troops have launched frontal assaults in large groups.

The British Ministry of Defence reported in March that Russia averaged nearly 1,000 casualties per day in February, including both killed and wounded soldiers, likely due to Russia’s grueling approach to the fighting.

Last year, independent Russian media Important Stories and the Conflict Intelligence Team published estimated that the life expectancy on the battlefield for Russian soldiers was about four and a half months.

On Monday, the British Ministry of Defense reported that casualties in Russia averaged more than 1,000 per day in May and June. That number is likely to remain above 1,000 for the next two months as Russia continues to try to overrun Ukrainian positions with large numbers of troops.

Despite mounting losses, Russia has managed to restore its manpower and capabilities, senior military officials said.

Martin Herem, the commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, told Bloomberg in January that NATO had significantly underestimated Russia’s ability to supply its forces with personnel and munitions.

And at a talk hosted by the Center for a New American Security in April, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said Russia has “almost completely” transformed its military capabilities after heavy losses in Ukraine.

Pivnenko also said that Russia will replenish its troops, so Ukraine should prepare its own reserves and armaments.

He told Ukrinform that this involves developing training centers and purchasing weapons, military equipment, drones, armored vehicles, air defense systems, portable air defense systems and ammunition.

If Ukraine is “one step ahead of Russia, then everything will be fine,” he said.
