This offseason, the Buffalo Sabers traded Matthew Savoie to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio. After the move, questions were naturally asked about why the Sabers traded away one of their top prospects in what some thought was a disappointing return.

However, McLeod is now flourishing with the Sabres, and the move is already looking incredibly better for Buffalo than some feared.
McLeod has already cemented himself as a key player on the Sabers roster. He has made a strong impact offensively, with six goals and 12 points in his first 18 games. This is after he scored 12 goals and 30 points in 81 games last season with Edmonton.
McLeod isn’t slowing down either as he has one goal and three points over his last two games. Due to his strong play, the 2018 second-round pick has been getting reps on the club’s first line while star Tage Thompson has been sidelined.
But in addition to performing well offensively for the Sabres, McLeod’s defensive play also makes him an important part of the club’s penalty kill.
McLeod has been a pleasant surprise for the Sabers so far this campaign. It will be fascinating to see how the 25-year-old builds on his stellar start in Buffalo from here.
