The Sacramento County coroner’s office identified a 12-year-old boy as one of five victims killed in five shootings that rocked the Sacramento region over the weekend.
Santino Contreras was walking in the Meadowview neighborhood around 6 p.m. Saturday when he was shot at least once, Sacramento police said. Officers were called to the 7600 block of 22nd Street, near Meadowview Road. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officer Allison Smith, a police spokeswoman, said an altercation occurred shortly before Contreras’ death, but it was unclear what the boy’s involvement was.
Contreras was the third and final fatality in the shootings that broke out Saturday. Two men were shot earlier at J and 24 Streets, one of whom died after the incident at 1 a.m. Saturday. A woman died at about 5 p.m. Saturday in the College/Glen neighborhood, police said.
Two people were killed Sunday morning in what police said were related sideshows that took place in South Natomas and North Sacramento. Another person was injured.
Contreras’ family has set up a GoFundMe to help his mother, who is grieving the loss of her eldest son.
