Safari Wilderness Ranch in Lakeland offers a lemur encounter

LAKELAND, Fla.They come from the island of Madagascar, but this endangered primate can also be found on islands here in Polk County.

Safari Wilderness Ranch has its own lemurs.

“We have a lot of lemurs in social groups, called troops,” said Lex Salisbury, the ranch’s owner. “They live in female-dominated societies, and we have them on islands which is a good way to contain them. They live in the trees.”

Visitors can see the lemurs as part of the ranch’s various tours, but there is also a chance to meet some of these special souls up close.

“Lemurs are primates like us, and they come from Madagascar,” says Salisbury. “They are very polite, we have a very safe educational experience where you can feed lemurs.”

The interactive experience with the lemurs allows visitors to personally approach, feed and interact with the playful primates.
