Sales of electric cars in Germany are stagnating, according to figures released by the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg on Wednesday.

About 29,700 battery-powered cars were newly registered in May, almost 31% less than a year ago, when there were still subsidies from the state and manufacturers for purchases.

“Demand for electric cars remains weak – despite price cuts across the board and new models,” said management consultancy EY. Their observations show that private individuals and companies are generally reluctant to make major purchases in light of the weakening German economy.

In total, approximately 236,000 new cars were registered in May, of which approximately 1.17 million were registered from January to May, which is approximately 5% more than in the same period last year.

The share of vehicles with petrol or diesel engines increased slightly in May compared to the same month last year. Thirty-eight percent of new cars were petrol, 19% diesel, 30% hybrid with a combined combustion engine and an electric motor, and just under 13% were pure electric vehicles.
