Samsung’s Frame TV review 2024: A better picture and more features than ever

Samsung

Samsung’s 2024 edition of the Frame isn’t just a smart TV. It becomes a decorative accent when you are not looking at something. As a QLED TV with 4K resolution, it also does an impressive job of presenting TV shows and movies, as well as sports and action-packed games. And it shows famous works of art with extreme detail and color accuracy. Paintings by famous artists look real, while photos look sharp and lifelike.

The Frame remains the most popular TV among our readers, and we’ve loved it for years. Samsung recently sent me the 65-inch model of the 2024 Frame TV to test firsthand. I was amazed at how clear and vibrant the picture quality is, how easy the TV is to operate and how elegant it looks on the wall.

To ensure that the Frame TV fits nicely into whatever room of your home you choose, this 2024 edition is available in six screen sizes: 43 inches ($1,000), 50 inches ($1,300), 55 inches ($1,500), 65- inch ($1,500), 65-inch ($1,000), inch ($2,000), 75-inch ($3,000) and 85-inch ($4,300). Best of all, you can often find this popular TV on sale on Samsung’s website, as well as on Amazon, at Best Buy, and at Walmart.

Pro tip: Many retailers will also continue to sell the 2023 edition, and for less money. If you’re looking for the most recent version of this smart TV, make sure the model number starts with LS03D and not LS03C.

Frame TV 2024: what’s new

Samsung has kept everything people love about the Frame TV, but added a few useful improvements for the 2024 version.

  • The TV is now Pantone validated. All colors appear sharper and more accurate. Video and artwork look more lifelike. The new version of the TV can bring out even the subtlest color differences, so things like skin tones appear more authentic. In addition to 100% color volume, you’ll see more contrast, depth and detail in whatever you watch.
  • Even without a subscription to Samsung’s Art Store, the Frame TV displays a new collection of 20 free works of art per month.
  • The television is more energy efficient. In Art mode, the screen’s dynamic refresh rate drops to 60Hz, so while artwork appears more realistic than when viewed on previous TV models, it requires less power to run. Using the motion sensor, the TV turns off when no one is in the room, but immediately starts art mode when it detects motion.
  • A light sensor measures ambient light and adjusts screen brightness in real time, so image quality remains consistent even as lighting in a viewing room changes.

Frame 2024: first impressions

In one word: “Wow!” When I got the chance to write a hands-on review about the previous version of the Frame TV, I was impressed with the overall design and performance. While many of the upgrades and changes to the 2024 edition of the TV are subtle, they do improve the TV viewing and art viewing experience. I noticed an improvement in the overall image quality and the sharpness of the colors.

In most cases, the Tizen operating system upgrades make controlling the TV easier. However, activating some of the TV’s lesser-used features was a bit confusing. For example, many apps for popular streaming services come pre-installed on the TV, which is great. But it took me a few minutes to find other apps, like Paramount+. The picture-in-picture mode is also a great feature, but it is a bit tricky to set up. Other functions, such as manually adjusting picture and sound quality, or switching between the TV’s different viewing modes, are more intuitive than ever.

In addition to controlling the TV with the portable solar remote, you can use the same SmartThings mobile app that is compatible with many of Samsung’s other smart devices.

Even without connecting a soundbar or surround sound system, the TV speakers fill an average-sized room with robust and clear sound. But to increase the sense of immersion, I recommend a soundbar. Samsung has nice options, such as the Samsung Q-Series HW-Q990D.

Visually, the TV’s thinness is quite miraculous. Samsung managed to keep the TV less than an inch thick, without sacrificing picture or sound quality. The Frame comes with a stand and wall bracket (something that many other TV brands charge extra for).

Choose a ring, any ring

You can choose from four edge designs, including modern white ($150), modern teak ($150), modern brown ($150) or sand gold metal ($250). These all attach to the outer edge of the TV with magnets, making it look like the TV is surrounded by a traditional picture frame.

So if the TV is mounted on the wall and Art mode is active, any painting displayed digitally on the screen will be almost indistinguishable from a real framed painting hanging on the wall next to it – especially if you spend more than 10 minutes stands. two meters away.

2024 The frame: the display

As expected, the Frame TV offers a sharp, crisp and clear picture. It also does a good job with high action. However, it’s the screen’s matte finish that sets it apart when it comes to reducing or eliminating unwanted glare, without sacrificing image quality, clarity or sharpness.

The TV, with its variable 120Hz refresh rate, automatically adjusts brightness and settings to accommodate varying ambient lighting situations or frequent changes in brightness with whatever content you’re watching. That said, with a few clicks on the remote you can easily adjust the picture and sound settings to be exactly how you want them. Additionally, using advanced artificial intelligence, the TV automatically upscales non-native 4K programs in real time to display them in a resolution as close to 4K as possible.

Using the TV’s One Connect Box

The Frame TV itself only has one port. This is located at the back of the TV and can be connected to a supplied One Connect Box with a supplied cable. This box acts as the main hub of the TV. Here you connect the power cable and access the ports for connecting other equipment.

Thanks to the One Connect Box, you can hang the Frame TV on the wall with only one thin cable sticking out. The power cable and cables for all other connected equipment connect to the One Control Box, which can be mounted or placed away from the actual TV.

You can simply connect your set-top cable TV box or install apps from your cable TV provider and watch all the channels and networks you already pay for. Additionally, Frame provides easy access to all popular video streaming services, as well as the Samsung TV Plus service, which offers free live and on-demand programming, including many classic TV series and movies.

You can easily connect your favorite video game consoles via one of the TV’s four HDMI ports. The TV’s Game Hub makes it easy to select your gaming console and then adjust the TV’s picture and audio settings to suit the games you like to play.

However, the Frame does not need a console to play popular games. You can mate wireless game controllers to the TV and with a paid subscription to an online gaming service (such as Xbox Game Pass or Nvidia GeForce Now), play thousands of popular titles straight from the TV.

Explore art mode

The Samsung Art Store (which requires a subscription) now contains a library of more than 2,500 famous works of art. When no one is watching TV, the Frame can display all these works of art in high definition. You can display just one of your favorite paintings, have the Frame present a slideshow of artwork, or create a schedule to show specific artwork at specific times of the day and night.

The artwork can also be interspersed with some of your own favorite digital photos. The TV’s new Pantone validation improves the accuracy of the colors and details of the artwork, so in some cases you can clearly see brush strokes and the subtle transition between colors, as an artist intended.

Samsung’s Frame TV 2024: Final Thoughts…

The design of the Frame is brilliant. It’s thin, looks great on the wall, and allows you to transform the look and aesthetic of a room based on the artwork you want to display when you’re not looking at the programming. The matte finish of the screen and the Tizen operating system, together with the technology built into the TV, provide an extremely pleasant viewing experience.

That said, the differences between the 2024 edition of the Frame and the previous version are subtle. The upgrades made to the TV’s internal workings aren’t enticing enough for me to recommend you immediately upgrade from the previous version to this one.

But if you’ve never owned a Frame TV, I highly recommend adding one to the wall in the living room or family room of your home, where household members and guests enjoy watching TV and appreciate being in the see famous works of art in the meantime.
