San Angelo police warn of the dangers of summer heat in parked cars

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) – Police Officer Richard Espinoza highlights the rapid rise in temperatures in vehicles parked in direct sunlight.

“People need to be aware that when their vehicles are in direct sunlight, temperatures can increase 20 degrees within 10 minutes compared to outside,” said Espinoza, public information officer for the San Angelo Police Department. “It could go up to about 50 degrees in about an hour.”

Espinoza recommends calling 9-1-1 in emergencies because officers can assist in such situations. “We would like to remind the public to ensure the back seats of their vehicles are clear of children and pets. Even on a day when it is 80 degrees outside, the temperature in a closed car can exceed 100 degrees in less than half an hour,” he added.

As the summer heat increases, San Angelo police are urging residents to be cautious about the dangers of leaving children and pets in parked cars.
