SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot Saturday afternoon during an attempted robbery in downtown San Francisco, the city’s mayor and local police officials said.
In a statement, San Francisco police said officers responded to a report of a shooting about a block from Union Square just after 3:30 p.m. local time, where they found two men with injuries, one of whom was Pearsal. Both were taken to area hospitals.
During their preliminary investigation, officers learned that the suspect had attempted to rob Pearsal, after which a “physical altercation” ensued in which both the suspect and Pearsal were injured.
No further details were provided and police could not say whether a firearm was found at the scene.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, is in custody and is expected to be charged, police said.

Police have not released details about the exact nature of the injuries Pearsall and the suspect sustained, or their conditions.
San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced in a social media post Saturday evening that Pearsall had been shot during an attempted robbery and that the suspect had been arrested at the scene.
“We will provide further updates, including on his condition, as I receive them,” Breed wrote.
CBS News has reached out to representatives for the Niners and Pearsall for comment.
The 24-year-old Pearsall was selected by the Niners in April with the 31st overall pick out of Florida.
