San Francisco Bay Area hosts several events to commemorate Memorial Day

The Bay Area commemorates Memorial Day with several events across the region, including the lighting of the beacon atop Mount Diablo.

What is Remembrance Day?

It was originally called Decoration Day and was held on May 30. The memorial event was held after the Civil War to decorate the graves of those who died in the war.

After World War I, Decoration Day was expanded to include soldiers who died in all American wars. It was then declared a national holiday in 1971 and became known as Memorial Day. Another day was chosen so that it would take place on the last Monday in May.
