A San Francisco judge has dismissed most charges against an activist group the Golden Gate Bridge caseaccording to a press release issued Friday.
Judge Brendan P. Conroy dismissed 32 of 44 charges against 26 Bay Area activists, known as GG26, who were arrested during an April 15 protest on the Golden Gate Bridge, the news release said. One person was dismissed from the business entirely.
The judge also signaled openness to reducing misdemeanor charges against eight protesters and could adjust restitution amounts at the next hearing on Dec. 6, authorities noted.
“Today’s decision is a huge victory for our clients and the community at large,” said Jeff Wozniak, an attorney representing the protesters charged with misdemeanor assault. “The clients know that their actions were righteous, intended to stand up for the thousands of Palestinians murdered over the past year, and that the initial, overly harsh accusations were merely an attempt to silence their activism.”
The demonstration, which called for an end to US support for Israeli actions in Gaza and an arms embargo against Israel, briefly disrupted traffic on the bridge, authorities said.
