San Rafael police arrest two car theft suspects using LPR cameras

Police in San Rafael on Tuesday credited the city’s license plate recognition (LPR) cameras with helping officers locate a vehicle reported stolen out of Oakland and two suspects who were arrested.

The post said the cameras “began to capture the movement and location” of a car reported stolen in Oakland on Tuesday shortly before 2 p.m. Officers were able to establish a perimeter, locate the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of Canal St. and Medway Rd. a short time later.

According to police, the two suspects in the car were arrested without incident. The stolen vehicle will be processed for evidence and will be turned over to the owner. Police noted that the incident remains under active investigation.
