Scammers are posing as sheriff’s deputies in Union County

Nov. 9—LEWISBURG — The Union County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving officers posing as deputies.

Names of actual working deputies and judges are used, along with providing call-back information through a voicemail box set up to mimic the county sheriff’s office. According to the sheriff, the actors may have personal information about their potential victims, including dates of birth, addresses and names of family members.

The scammers ask for money and state that the potential victim will be fined for not showing up for a court hearing, jury selection, grand jury or some other hearing, the sheriff said.

The sheriff’s office will not request money or fines over the phone for any reason. If a warrant has been issued and you are contacted by telephone, you will be asked to appear in person to deal with the matter.

Anyone with questions or concerns can contact Chief Deputy Scott Hahn at 570-524-8716.
