CHICAGO (CBS) — The first snow of the season in the Chicago area will begin Wednesday evening as scattered light rain showers return to the area, turning to snow showers after dark.
Although it will be cold and windy at night with occasional showers, this isn’t the biggest snowfall coming our way.
A few suburbs will wake up Thursday to a dusting of snow on the grass, but heavier snow will move into the area from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The snow will briefly change to rain showers late Thursday before tapering off completely.
With temperatures near or just below freezing during the heaviest snow periods, wet snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are now expected throughout Chicago and much of the area. A band of heavier snow up to 3 inches is possible in parts of northwestern Indiana, while snow totals will be slightly lower in the far western suburbs.
While much of the accumulation will occur on grassy and elevated surfaces, slush is possible on roads Thursday morning through early afternoon. Be extremely careful when driving in winter weather conditions.
The gray, cold weather will continue on Friday, after which temperatures will rise slightly this weekend with periods of sunshine.
