World number one Scottie Scheffler recovered from a triple-bogey midway through the round to extend his lead to four shots after three rounds of the Memorial Tournament.

The night’s leader, Scheffler, 27, was two under after eight holes but saw his three-shot lead evaporate on the ninth after hitting his tee shot into the trees.

However, the American managed to regain his composure, starting with a birdie on the next hole, and finishing with a one-under-par 71 after two more birdies and a bogie on the 18th.

“I feel like I didn’t hit many shots outside the line at all today and I had a triple on my card and all of a sudden I was one over par,” Scheffler said of his frustrating ninth hole.

“I was definitely frustrated with the break, but overall I thought, I’m still swinging really well. I didn’t have to change anything, I just had to stay in the right frame of mind.”

The two-time Masters champion is 10 down heading into Sunday’s final round at Muirfield Village in Ohio, four shots ahead of Canada’s Adam Hadwin, American Colin Morikawa and Austria’s Sepp Straka.

Morikawa and Straka both shot four-under-par 68s to join first-round leader Hadwin in a tie for second after his 72.

American PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg are at four under, a share of fifth place.

The tournament is one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, with a field of 73 players competing for a purse of $20 million (£15.6 million). It precedes next week’s US Open in Pinehurst.
