Sean Kingston remains in jail as he and his mother are accused of defrauding multiple companies – and new details have emerged about the charges against them.
According to arrest warrants obtained by Yahoo Entertainment on May 28, the “Beautiful Girls” singer faces multiple charges of grand theft, criminal use of personal identifying information and fraud. Kingston’s mother, Janice Turner, was taken into custody last week on the same charges. They are said to have stolen more than $1 million worth of goods and money. Here’s the latest.
➡️ Kingston allegedly defrauded jeweler, car dealer and others
The singer faces 10 charges in Broward County, Florida, while his mother faces eight charges for crimes alleged to have occurred between October 2023 and March 2024. The arrest warrants shed more light on the companies believed to be targeted.
The two are accused of stealing a Cadillac Escalade worth $159,701.49, $480,000 worth of jewelry and a custom bed worth $86,568.33. They are accused of orchestrating a scheme to defraud retailers. They allegedly used fake IDs to defraud banks and are accused of writing bad checks.
Kingston’s two additional charges involve violating probation for a previous charge of dealing in stolen property. He was also hit with an additional count of criminal use of personal identification information.
🗣️ What did Kingston say?
Yahoo Entertainment reached out to the musician’s attorney in light of the arrest warrant but did not receive a response. Kingston was arrested in California on May 23, the same day his mother was taken into custody in Florida.
After his mother’s arrest made headlines, Kingston wrote on his Instagram Story, “People love negative energy! I’m good and so is my mom!… my lawyers are handling everything as we speak.”
Kingston’s attorney, Bob Rosenblatt, previously told NBC News that his client will waive extradition. “We were working on getting him back to Florida after his show,” he explained. “We want him back as soon as possible so that we can prove that this is only a civil matter and not a criminal matter. We look forward to fighting this case in court.”
🗓️ Kingston still behind bars in California
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s inmate locator shows the 34-year-old is in custody and ineligible for bail. His extradition hearing is Tuesday.
As for Turner, the Broward County Jail confirmed she was released on May 26 around 5:54 p.m.
⚖️ This isn’t Kingston or Turner’s first run-in with the law
As stated in the warrant, Kingston is currently serving a two-year probation for trafficking stolen property. In February, he was accused of fraud and breach of contract in a lawsuit filed by Ver Ver Entertainment, which sells and installs high-end entertainment sound systems.
According to the New York Times, Kingston made a deal with the entertainment company: to secure a lower down payment, he would convince Justin Bieber to make promotional videos for the company. That never happened. Bieber and Kingston previously collaborated on the 2010 song ‘Eenie Meenie’.
In 2006, Turner pleaded guilty to charges of bank fraud and submitting fraudulent loan applications. She was sentenced to 16 months in prison.
