(CBS DETROIT) – The second “Peacnic” of the summer took place this past weekend on the west side of Detroit.

“It’s a great feeling, especially because of the fact that all the violence that normally happens in the city, they’re coming together to try to reduce the violence,” said Detroit native Tamica Nixon, who spent some time with her grandchildren in O’Hair Park Saturday afternoon.

These “peaceful” events are part of the One Detroit Violence Reduction Partnership, a coalition of community and law enforcement partners working together to develop and implement strategies to reduce violent crime.

“The 8th and 9th Precincts are our highest crime and population density precincts. This is a great opportunity to show the community that we need to work with the community and address the root causes that influence crime,” said Detroit Police Chief James White.

White joined with more than 70 community organizations and other local, state and federal law enforcement officials to provide entertainment for the children, food and resources such as job training and removal tools.
