Second teen charged in murder of KC chief Shaun Brady remains in custody

The second of two teenagers charged in the murder of popular Irish chef Shaun Brady last week will remain in custody, a Jackson County judge ruled during a hearing Wednesday.

The boy — identified in Jackson County Family Court by his initials, LM — was charged with second-degree murder and attempted robbery, both felonies, for his role in the Aug. 28 shooting.

Brady, 44, was fatally shot during a confrontation with a group in the parking lot behind Brady & Fox, the Irish restaurant he co-owned in Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood. Two teenage boys and a vehicle that police have linked to the killing were found shortly after the shooting.

Shaun Brady, pictured here in 2019 while working as a chef at Brady’s Public House, was shot dead outside his restaurant Brady & Fox on August 28.

Jennifer Ware, who represented the Jackson County juvenile deputies at the hearing, said LM was part of the group trying to steal a vehicle when Brady was shot.

“The group showed total disregard for the victim’s life,” she said.

Megan Roth, who represented LM at the hearing, stressed that he was not the one who shot Brady.

“LM understands the charges are extremely serious but wants the court to know he was not the shooter but was a passenger in the car,” she said.

Jackson County Family Court Judge Jennifer Phillips ruled that LM would remain in protective custody. She said she expected a public defender to be appointed to represent him.

His next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 25. The other teen charged in the shooting, who is charged with second-degree murder, attempted theft of a motor vehicle and armed criminal action, also has a hearing scheduled for the same day. He also remains in custody.
