Sen. Mitch McConnell is ‘doing well’ after medical staff were spotted in his office, GOP senator says

WASHINGTON— Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, is recovering from minor injuries after a fall after Senate Republicans’ weekly luncheon on Tuesday, his office said.

“Leader McConnell stumbled after lunch. He suffered a small cut to the face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to resume his schedule,” a spokesperson for McConnell said in a statement.

On his way to the Senate floor later Tuesday, McConnell told reporters he is “feeling good.” He had a bandage under his left eye and a bandage on his left wrist.

Medical workers left McConnell’s office Tuesday just after 2 p.m. after Senate Republicans’ weekly lunch. At that point, an ambulance was spotted on the Capitol grounds not far from the Senate doors, but left shortly afterwards.

“He’s doing well. He’s in his office,” McConnell’s deputy, Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters.

McConnell, R-Ky., has had health problems in recent years. He will step down as minority leader after this year, but will continue to serve in the Senate for the next term when Thune takes over the Republican conference.

McConnell pledged last year to serve out the remaining two years of his six-year Senate term, which ends in January 2027, without making any further announcement. He also said he plans to use his seniority as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee for the next two years.
