Sen. Lindsey Graham is pushing for fellow Republican Scott Bessent to be Donald Trump’s next Treasury secretary, which could fend off a late indictment from Howard Lutnick and end Wall Street’s wait.
Graham, a close Trump ally, said that both he and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., the Banks’ new chairman, both have a “good opinion” of Bessent and that he has spoken to Trump’s transition team about Bessent , a low-key investor from the Palmetto State.
“I think he would be excellent. He is from South Carolina, I know him well, he is highly qualified,” Graham told Semafor in an interview on Thursday. “I think he was properly vetted.”
The Treasury Department is one of the biggest question marks for Trump’s Cabinet after the new president selected a slew of positions, some conventional and some controversial, for his new administration. Lutnick, CEO of real estate brokerage Cantor Fitzgerald, is one of Trump’s transition co-chairs and is bidding for the job, according to people familiar with the matter.
