Several animals were rescued from an overnight house fire in Westborough.

According to Westborough Fire, crews responded to 3 Fisher St. around 12:54 a.m. Sunday for a report of a fire at a single-family home.

Upon arrival, crews were met with heavy fire from the home. Fire officials confirmed that the residents had already been evacuated, but that several animals were still in the house. Westborough firefighters were able to safely locate and rescue a dog and four cats

Crews conducted an aggressive interior and exterior attack and extinguished the majority of the fire within 15 minutes. Emergency services remained on site for approximately 2 hours.

There are no injuries to report.

Primary investigation shows the fire started in the kitchen and dining room and came from a battery-operated appliance, the Westboro Fire Department said.

“I would like to commend our crew who quickly entered the home to rescue five animals,” Chief Purcell said. “They were then able to get the fire under control in a short time. This was a tremendous effort by Westborough Fire and our mutual aid partners.

The house was determined to be uninhabitable and the fire is estimated to have caused approximately $500,000 in damage. The Massachusetts Red Cross is assisting residents.

Mutual aid was provided at the scene by the Northboro, Southboro and Hopkinton fire departments and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

This is a development story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
