PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Heat and humidity return to the Philadelphia area on Wednesday, along with the chance of strong to severe thunderstorms late afternoon into the night.
In the afternoon the perceived temperature can rise above 38 degrees Celsius. The storms can produce heavy rain, flooding, gusts, hail and even an occasional tornado.
Because of all of this, we have declared Wednesday a NEXT Weather Alert Day, as the entire Philadelphia region is at low risk for severe weather.
A heat advisory is in effect for much of the area, including Philadelphia, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents should drink plenty of water, spend enough time in the air conditioning and take frequent breaks from the heat.
As a cold front moves through the area Wednesday through Thursday, several showers and thunderstorms are possible. The timing for this should be after 4:00 PM west of Philadelphia, between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM in the city, and after 6:00 PM across the Jersey Shore.
These rounds of storms will continue throughout the late evening and even into Thursday morning. However, the severe weather threat should end before midnight.
On Thursday we start to clear everything away and dry it out, while the sun returns around noon.
