NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Dangerous weather has impacted The Metro, as well as other areas in The Rio Grande River Valley. Active weather in the form of floods and thunderstorms, some of which are severe, swept through with high winds. In addition, temperatures have dropped in areas where it has rained.
Earlier today, parts of the South Fork burn scar received at least several inches of rain, with flash flooding in and around the Ruidoso area. Now, a few of the storms have produced potentially damaging hail in addition to the heavy rain and gusty winds around Albuquerque, as most storms move relatively quickly from south to north. While some communities closer to the border are in the low triple digits with rain-free conditions, most areas in the Gila National Forest, the Sacramento Mountains, around the urban areas of the Rio Grande and along the New Mexico-Colorado border are . is now in the 60s and low 70s! Thunderstorms got their fuel from the afternoon heat, the abundant moisture in the atmosphere and even some help from the arrival of a backdoor cold front. Ultimately, if the storms lose strength this evening as they move into the northern part of the region, the northeastern gorges could experience even stronger east-northeast winds early as rain-cooled air will continue to spread.
The high pressure area to the east will continue to push moisture into the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, likely bringing storms through July 4.
