Severe weather possible for the Philadelphia region on Memorial Day – when to expect rain and wind

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – While both Saturday and Sunday of the holiday weekend weren’t perfect, with a few showers and a few rumbles, most areas in and around Philly had a chance to enjoy summer temperatures and a decent amount of sunshine. With an approaching front, that’s about to change for Memorial Day, with a NEXT weather warning for the entire area on Monday.

Here’s the setup: A warm front will move further north this evening, ushering in scattered showers by morning. This will also help clear some of the persistent fog that plagued the Jersey Shore for much of Sunday.

Although there may be some showers in the morning, we do not expect severe weather.

A chart for Monday's weather: Thunderstorms are expected across the region, with temperatures reaching 77 degrees in Philadelphia, 70 degrees on the coast and 76 degrees in the Lehigh Valley

However, we expect precipitation to decrease somewhat from late morning to early afternoon. This could allow high temperatures across the area to reach the mid and even 70s, with even a hint of sunshine possible. However, that won’t last long.

The main event will be a shower and a series of storms that will approach the area in the late afternoon and early evening. Timings will vary slightly, but expect the hours of 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM to be quite rainy and stormy. We also look at all the top-level data, which gives us indicators of our chances of severe weather.

Right now, heavy rain and the potential for flash flooding are the biggest concerns with these storms, along with wind gusts that could exceed 60 miles per hour. And while the tornado threat is low, it’s not zero, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for an isolated tornado.

A weather map shows a small risk of severe impacts in the Philadelphia region on Monday

By the time we get into late Monday evening and late Tuesday, the skies will clear and we will be in great shape for a very nice, sunny and season-filled Tuesday.

Make sure you have a plan B for Memorial Day – something inside, because you’ll need to take shelter quickly if a storm approaches. Of course, stay tuned to CBS News Philadelphia as the entire Next Weather Team will keep you informed and ahead of the storms.
