Severe weather possible today in northeastern Kansas, including high winds

The National Weather Service today issued a wind advisory for an area that includes Topeka.

Hail and tornadoes are possible, forecasters say.

The advisory will last from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will cover parts of east-central and northeastern Kansas, the weather service said on its Topeka office website.

“Expect wind speeds between 30 and 40 km/h with gusts up to 70 km/h,” it said.

The Topeka office of the National Weather Service posted this graphic on its website with information about the possibility of high winds today in parts of northeastern and east-central Kansas.

Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., the weather service said.

“The main hazards are quarter-sized hail and damaging wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour,” the report said. “Although less likely, a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.”
