Shanahan confirms CMC traveled to Germany to see injury specialist, originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Christian McCaffrey traveled abroad to get a second opinion on his ongoing injury.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed to reporters on Monday that the star player flew to Germany over the weekend to see a specialist for the inflammation in his Achilles tendon and a stiff calf that he has been experiencing since early August.
“I’m not sure who the doctor is,” Shanahan told reporters. “I know he’s seeing a specialist that I think can help him with his Achilles process. I think he’ll be doing that in the next couple of days, and hopefully it’ll help.”
The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year was waived at the last minute in San Francisco’s Week 1 win over the New York Jets.
Less than a week later, McCaffrey’s calf problems and Achilles tendon injury persisted, and the 49ers placed him on the injured list, keeping him out until mid-October.
During his three-game absence, Jordan Mason was the driving force behind San Francisco’s team, delivering some impressive performances.
Despite the 49ers’ rough start, it’s likely San Francisco will continue to take a cautious approach to McCaffrey’s injury.
After all, San Francisco is expected to have another long and competitive season, and Shanahan and co. would undoubtedly prefer a fully healthy McCaffrey.
