Kyle Shanahan responded wittily when asked if 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa would compete against the Chicago Bears next Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.

“I am not a god,” Shanahan told reporters. “I think he has a chance to play this week. So I think this would lead to a better opportunity [of him playing] every week. But I don’t know the answer to that.”

The 27-year-old suffered a hip injury during a Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks and has not played since. San Francisco’s defense has faltered in recent weeks, unable to do much and allowing opposing quarterbacks to put up huge numbers.

Getting Bosa back would be a huge boost, but the 49ers have other problems that his return wouldn’t solve. Missed tackles and botched assignments have plagued the unit in recent weeks.

At 5-7, San Francisco has dim playoff hopes, but it should win and get some help to get back into the postseason. A win on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium would go a long way to righting the ship heading into the final stretch.

With a challenging matchup against the Bears ahead, the 49ers will need a better performance from defense with or without Bosa.
