Showers and thunderstorms are expected in the KC area. This is the time when the strongest storms will hit

Several showers and thunderstorms will move through the Kansas City area over the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms developed in eastern Kansas and western Missouri on Thursday, bringing the chance of isolated to scattered showers and perhaps a thunderstorm to the Kansas City metro, the weather service said. The storms were not expected to be severe, but lightning was possible.

The rest of the day should be quiet as temperatures are expected to rise to around 83 degrees under sunny skies. Humidity will also be low as dew points are expected to be in the 40s and 50s.

In general, the weather feels dry and comfortable when summer dew points are 55 degrees or less. Between the ages of 55 and 65 it feels ‘sticky’ and stuffy again. Above 65, the humidity in the air makes it feel oppressive, the weather service said.

Calm weather is expected for most of Friday, with sunny skies and temperatures rising into the upper 80s.

Heavy thunderstorms possible

The next round of showers and thunderstorms are expected to return late Friday and last through Saturday morning, the weather service said. There is some chance of severe storms with heavy rainfall.

The storms are expected to develop in Nebraska and organize into a storm system that will move southward into the Kansas City area overnight. They are expected to utilize very moist air, and conditions could produce some strong to severe storms.

The main threats will be heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding, damaging winds and large hail.

After the storms clear from the area, skies will become partly sunny and temperatures will rise into the mid-80s.

A cold front is expected to move south of Kansas City. Storms are possible along the front Saturday evening through Sunday.

The most likely area for storms will be southern Kansas to southern Missouri and parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas. There is some chance that storms will reach the southern half of the Kansas City forecast area, but storms should remain south of the US 50 freeway in the southern part of the metro area.

Skies will be sunny on Sunday, with temperatures in the low 70s.
