IPSWICH – A large white shark sighting forced a popular beach on the North Shore of Massachusetts to temporarily close on Tuesday.

The sighting was confirmed off the eastern side of Crane Beach in Ipswich via the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s ‘Sharktivity’ app.

“There has been a confirmed fin sighting at Crane Beach. The beach is closed to swimming until further notice,” read a social media post from The Trustees of Reservations, which manages Crane Beach.

SkyEye spotted the shark on Tuesday afternoon. It was being watched by a nearby boat and by people on the beach.

Shark sighting off North Coast “not uncommon”

Massachusetts shark biologist John Chisholm told WBZ-TV that it’s “not uncommon” to see white sharks in the North Shore. He said there have been several sightings in the past week.

“The sighting we made in the morning was right off the beach, so we issued a shark warning,” he said.

According to the Sharktivity app, a sighting was also confirmed on Cape Cod, about 100 yards south of Coast Guard Beach in Eastham.

This is the highlight shark seasonsaid Chisholm.

“Everyone thinks they’re right off the Cape, but they’re all over Massachusetts and Maine,” he said. “You can find a great white anywhere along the coast.”
