Known for its quick breakfast and lunch, Yor Dogg Mil has been a New Bedford staple since 1971. Sadly, Phyl Morago’s restaurant at 847 Kempton St. is joining the list of local restaurants closing their doors. Morago is now ready to retire and this staple product will officially close its doors on December 28, 2024.
A federal judge has ruled that Buttonwood Park Zoo elephant Ruth “received consistent and high-quality veterinary care,” while dismissing a lawsuit against the city. The judge’s ruling said the plaintiff could not provide any evidence that the zoo had failed to properly care for its two Asian elephants, Emily and Ruth.

The “Joe” in Not Your Average Joe’s: New Bedford honors the life of Joseph Silverstein
The “Joe” from Not Your Average Joe’s and Joe’s Original in Dartmouth passed away on November 13. Joseph Silverstein, 97, also served as president of the family department store Silverstein’s for 50 years.
“Joe Silverstein was a civic leader in the finest tradition of corporate America,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “I extend my condolences to his family, who proudly continues his legacy of business success and civic leadership, and my gratitude for all his good works.”

When Jake Ashworth left his position as Bishop Stang boys basketball coach after one season to pursue his dream of becoming a Major League Baseball umpire, Stang athletic director Nate Greene knew just the person to call.
JJ Nunes. This is Nunes’ first head coaching job at the high school level.
He has coached Fairhaven’s baseball program in some capacity since 2011 and was previously an assistant football coach for the Blue Devils.

Last week, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy dropped his reviews of several pizza spots in the New Bedford area while he was spotted filming in early October.
In Portnoy’s One Bite Pizza Reviews series, a YouTube channel with over 1.37 million subscribers as of October 2024, he shows himself ordering a large cheese pizza from restaurants across the country and giving it a rating out of 10.

In the past 25 years, there have been only about 40 confirmed cases of coyotes attacking humans, according to MassWildlife biologist Stephen Wright, who spoke at Dartmouth City Hall last week during a coyote information program.
Sadly, North Dartmouth resident Kathy Normore became one of those victims. MassWildlife emphasizes the importance of removing food sources, securing pets and understanding coyote behavior to minimize negative encounters.

As New Bedford school officials and teachers prepare to enter contract negotiations — which Thomas Nickerson, president of the New Bedford Educators Association, said will begin before the end of the year — Nickerson and others took to the public comment table last week to ask members of to give the school committee a glimpse into what union members expect.
Things NBA members will look for in their next contract, Nickerson said, are “better working conditions, especially for our working parents,” “more autonomy” for teachers, and — citing higher living costs — “a strong pay package.” ‘
