Sisters of Saint Joseph celebrate 164th year in Erie

The Sisters of Saint Joseph celebrated their founding in Erie on Saturday, which dates all the way back to 1860.

Although the group has existed in Erie for more than 160 years, on a global scale the organization is approaching 375 years since its founding in France.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph have played a key role in the development of Erie and its impact on various communities.

“For someone like me, who was raised by the sisters through my education, it is always nice to give something back to the sisters, and many people do that. They could not continue the ministries without the support of the community,” said Almitra Clerkin, executive director of the Sisters of Saint Joseph Mission and Ministries Foundation.

The sisters now turn their attention to the holidays, where on Thanksgiving morning, about 60 volunteers will deliver about 1,300 meals to families in need throughout Erie.
