Skipper, dog, rescued Thursday afternoon 20 miles off the coast of Sanibel, moved to RWS

A boater and a dog were rescued in “good health” from a disabled vessel near Sanibel, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, authorities found the disabled boat 20 miles off the coast of Sanibel. Officials said the mayday call came in around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Officials said the skipper — whose gender they were able to confirm — and their dog were taken to Southwest Florida International Airport.

Keily Delerme, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Sanibel remained in the wild about 263 miles from Helene. The storm made its closest approach to the barrier island on Thursday around 3 p.m.
