SLO County Elementary School went on lockdown after a student said they saw a man with a gun

An Atascadero elementary school went on lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a student saw someone with a gun near the campus, according to Atascadero police.

Police officers responded to a call at Santa Rosa Academic Academy around 1:35 p.m., according to a news release from the agency.

During a school break, a student playing on the north edge of the playground saw a man take what appeared to be a gun from a vehicle and take it to a nearby home, the release said.

“The child was unable to articulate the make or model of the weapon,” officer Jeffrey Wilshusen told The Tribune. “They described it as a long gun or a shotgun.”

Minutes after police arrived on the scene, they locked down the school, secured the perimeter of the campus and began an investigation.

Despite a thorough search of the area, officers were unable to identify the specific location where the student reported seeing the suspect and weapon, the release said.

Officers confirmed during the investigation that the person never directly threatened the student or pointed the weapon, the release said.

Officers and county administrators lifted the shelter-in-place order at 2:09 p.m. after determining there was no immediate security threat and no crime had occurred, Wilshusen said.

The school resumed normal activities for the rest of the day.
