A Cessna plane made an emergency landing in a field a short distance from Van Nuys Airport Thursday morning, with both occupants ejecting safely, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

As the plane approached the airport, about a half-mile from the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area crash site in Sherman Oaks, a distress signal was sent saying they could not reach the airport.

An emergency landing was made, during which the plane fell over. The pilot and a passenger left the plane before first responders arrived. According to LAFD, they did not appear to have life-threatening injuries and did not seek medical attention at the scene.

When SKYCal flew overhead around 7:30 a.m., firefighters had surrounded the plane, revealing a crashed, cracked nose.
