Blake Snell’s performance in the Giants’ 7-5 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday at Oracle Park came to an abrupt end.

While San Francisco led New York 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Snell appeared to injure himself on a 1-0 pitch to Alex Verdugo with the bases loaded and two outs.

Snell left and walked off the field with senior director of athletic training Dave Groeschner.

The Giants later announced that Snell left the game with left groin tightness. After Sunday’s loss, manager Bob Melvin revealed he would be surprised if Snell doesn’t go on the IL, but will wait for confirmation after the left-handed star undergoes an MRI on Monday.

Snell had perhaps his best outing of the season before the injury, being charged two additional earned runs after left-handed pitcher Erik Miller replaced him and surrendered a two-run double to Alex Verdugo to tie the game at three.
