Snow falls across New York and New Jersey to start Christmas Eve

NEW YORK– Some light snow is moving through New York City and the surrounding area just in time for Christmas Eve.

It is a First Alert Weather Day through the Tuesday morning hours. Although the impact will be minimal and quick, be careful of slippery spots.

Light snow is making its way into New York City, moving from northwest to southeast. It will snow for a maximum of two to three hours in each location, and by late morning it will be well offshore.

If you plot it out, you can expect snow showers to hit the north and west between 8 and 9 a.m. It will be through town around 10am, then off the coast at 11am.

Totals will be light, with an inch of coating for most. The higher elevations of Sullivan, Ulster and parts of Orange counties could see 1 to 3 inches of rise quickly. Small impacts overall, but enough to slow you down early today.

By lunchtime the sky will start to clear and some sunshine will return in the afternoon. Temperatures will eventually rise above freezing, with a high in the mid-30s.

It will be smooth for Santa at night, with partly cloudy skies. The low will be in the 20s.

As for Christmas Day and the first night of Hanukkah, things look quiet. Mostly sunny skies with highs in the 30s.

After the quick light snow shower this morning, the next chance of precipitation will not occur until late in the weekend. And now that a milder trend is underway, it will rain.
