Some Juneteenth events in Detroit have been canceled due to a heat wave

(CBS DETROIT) — Southeast Michigan experienced another hot day this weekwith some Juneteenth events in Detroit being canceled.

“I’ve been in the house. It’s like air in there, it’s not cold in here,” Downtown Detroit resident Quan Laws told CBS News Detroit. “I’ve just been in my house or car with central air,” he told us when talking about the warm weather in Detroit today.

Laws was born and raised in Detroit, and when it’s hot outside, he says he doesn’t venture too far from home when it’s over 90 degrees outside.

Laws and several other Detroiters gathered downtown despite the heat to see “The Color Purple” on Juneteenth at Campus Martius. It is the first film to be shown during ‘Movie Nights in the D’, which takes place all summer long.

“To me it’s super cool just because it’s so up and coming in Detroit. I’ve grown up here all my life and it’s never been like this before, so now that we get to do things like this, we come together and we’re so supportive. kind of like a family,” Laws said.

The event at Campus Martius was one of the last remaining. Events such as the second annual Juneteenth Run outside Henry Ford Health and the Detroit Pistons practice facility were postponed. Other events, such as Juneteenth on the Cut at the Detroit Riverfront, were canceled entirely.

Everything that didn’t happen was done because of the heat, ultimately with people’s safety in mind.

“Because the humidity is also very high, we’re also seeing a lot of people who have chronic problems with their lungs, so people with asthma and COPD are having more and more trouble breathing,” said Dr. Erin Brennen, the vice president. chief of emergency medicine at DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital.

She said it’s important to listen to your body when you’re outside in this heat and, as usual, stay hydrated.

“Water is great, but if you’re really sweating a lot in the heat, make sure you get electrolytes, especially sodium and potassium.”
