Someone called 911 and said a bear had chased him off a cliff. Officers say it was murder

A manhunt is underway for a man who police say killed a man to hide his false identity.

Earlier this month, 911 operators in Hamilton County, Tennessee received a call from a hiker named Brandon Andrade, who said he had fallen off a cliff while running from a bear and was seriously injured.

When emergency workers found him, the man was dead. He had identification showing his name was Brandon Kristopher Andrade.

Investigators later learned that the man who died was not Andrade and that the real Brandon Andrade’s identity had previously been stolen by Nicholas Wayne Hamlett.

Hamlett was living under Andrade’s name and used another assumed name when officers spoke to him about the hiker’s call. They say Hamlett left his home in Tennessee before investigators could determine his real name.

They have not yet been able to identify the victim and are currently calling him John Doe.
