(CBS DETROIT) — Two Detroit organizations want to make sure everyone has something to eat this Christmas.
“There will be more than enough. No one goes away hungry, no one goes away hungry,” said Brother Gary Wegner, director of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
Wegner and his team of volunteers spent Christmas Eve serving hot plates of food. He says there is a lot of gratitude and generosity in a soup kitchen like the Capuchin.
“I have never met a grateful person who is not generous, and I have also met a generous person who is not grateful,” Wegner said.
Capuchin Soup Kitchen has two locations: one on Connor Street and one on Meldrum Street. Both are open to serve meals on Christmas Day. Dan O’Rourke, who has been serving meals with Capuchin since 2012, says his “Why” comes down to service.
“I like the idea of serving; you know, serving others. I think the service model appealed to me, so I enjoy that,” O’Rourke said.
Kapucijner will not be the only organization serving meals on Wednesdays. The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries will also be offering meals with a touch of Christmas cheer.
“We want them to forget all the pain and problems they have faced throughout the year and be able to celebrate Christmas or the holidays no matter where they come from. We do not discriminate; we just want to make sure everyone has a good time. great day,” said Chad Audi, president and CEO of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.
All six Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries kitchens will be open on Christmas Day. Dinner starts at 4:30 PM. Audi says serving the community during the holidays is special to him because it is an opportunity to be festive.
“It’s not just about satisfying their hunger, it’s more about feeling like someone loves them and someone cares for them,” he said.
