South Bay residents and firefighters prepare for high temperatures

It’s hot in the South Bay, with temperatures expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit over the next few days. People are already looking for creative ways to brave the high temperatures.

Some people brave the heat with a splash through the fountains in downtown San Jose

“It’s always nice and cool in the water and you know we have shade here under the trees,” says Javier Cascaneda.

On Monday, many families flocked to the fountains as temperatures rose above 32 degrees Celsius.

And this is just the beginning: temperatures of over 38 degrees are expected in the coming days.

“I have a pool at my apartment, so I’ll probably go swimming there. Maybe we’ll go to the beach,” Jeneva Alvarez and Luis Ponce said.

That seemed to be a familiar theme, with many people telling KPIX they were already making plans to leave the city and head to a cooler location.

“Go to the ocean. Yeah, Half Moon Bay or maybe Santa Cruz,” said Paul Padilla and Jennifer Liu.

While some flee to cooler temperatures, emergency workers are bracing for what could be a dangerous combination: a heat wave and the Fourth of July.

San Jose police posted a message on social media reminding people that fireworks are illegal in the city and can be very dangerous under such circumstances.

People say they understand, but still expect some to break the rules.

“I feel like every year there are more fireworks and about the same number of fires. But I don’t think much will change, honestly. It will just continue unless we hopefully get more rain,” said Javier Cascaneda

Of course, the hope is, especially given the circumstances expected this week, that people will be extra careful about celebrating the holiday this year.
