A South Carolina woman was killed in an early morning crash Sunday, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

Kelli Johnson, a 30-year-old Bonneau resident, died in what coroner Darnell Hartwell called an accident.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at about 1:55 a.m. on US 52 North, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

According to Miller, Johnson was driving a 2020 Hyundai SUV eastbound on US 52. At the intersection with Caprine Lane, a 2014 Dodge SUV traveling westbound on US 52 crossed the center line into the eastbound lane and collided head-on collision with the Hyundai, Miller said.

According to Hartwell, Johnson died at the scene.

Miller said neither a passenger in the Hyundai nor the driver of the Dodge were injured, and no other injuries were reported.

It was not yet known whether anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

No information was available on what caused the Dodge to crash into oncoming traffic, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

At least 357 people had died on South Carolina roadways through May 22 in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 11 people have died in accidents in Berkeley County in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 60 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
