South Korea’s Mega Coffee opens in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

South Korean coffee chain Mega Coffee will make its international debut with the opening of its first store in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, on May 30, 2024. World Coffee Portal has reported.

This marks a major milestone for the brand, which recently reached a national count of 3,000 stores.

To open the location, the value-oriented chain has entered into a master franchise agreement with Mongolian pharmaceutical company Asia Pharma.

The inaugural Mega Coffee outlet will be located on the first floor of Asia Pharma’s headquarters.

A Mega Coffee spokesperson said: “While there are no concrete plans yet to open additional stores in other locations, we are considering further expansion into other regions in Asia and the Americas, with the experiential knowledge we have gained from the Mongolian operation.”

Mega Coffee’s move to Mongolia follows in the footsteps of other South Korean coffee chains such as Caffebene, Tom N Toms Coffee and TOUS les JOURS, which already have a presence in the country.

With nearly half of Mongolia’s 3.4 million residents living in the capital, Ulaanbaatar is seen by the coffee chain as a promising hub for cultivating profits and business growth.

The company also sees the expansion as a catalyst for further growth in Asia.

Caffebene is currently the market leader in Mongolia with 38 stores, closely followed by domestic chain Jur Ur House & Bakery and Tom N Toms Coffee, with 33 and 32 locations respectively.

The market for branded coffee shops in Mongolia is expected to continue growing, with forecasts suggesting it could reach 200 outlets by the end of 2028.
